That was the year Nottingham-born England batter William Gunn partnered with local businessman Thomas James Moore to form GM, and so began a mission to create the best cricket bats ever seen.
Known for his scientific approach to batting at the crease, Gunn applied the same philosophy to batmaking, recruiting skilful crafters to create his vision of the perfect bat by way of painstaking processes.
Fast-forward a century, and that idea holds true today: while GM still use expert crafters to check and finish their bats, the initial shaping of the wood is performed by machine.

You may find some red wood on the edge of the blade, and there might be the odd knot or speck on the edge or the back, but the playing surface should be clean.
