Not many modern shoes can boast over a century of history, but the Chuck Taylor All Star, formerly the “Non-Skid”, is one of the few. The Converse Rubber Shoe Company’s first foray into the basketball world, the original “Non-Skid” or “All Star” shoe released in 1917, leveraging their rubber expertise for a fantastically grippy outsole that was perfect for the court. It was popular and effective, but what of the name Chuck Taylor? A few years later, in 1922, Converse hired young semi-pro Charles H. “Chuck” Taylor as a coach and salesman.
