First released in 1987, the Nike Air Max premiered some specific innovations that would later pop up again and again. Designed by the up-and-coming Tinker Hatfield, who had only been with Nike since ’85, the original AM was looking to push boundaries with brand-new Max Air cushioning and an architecturally inspired design. On top of new, ultra-soft Air cushioning, the iconic visible Air midsole would draw the eye and show off the tech in style. A few questioning voices believed that Tinker had gone too far, but the result speaks for itself – incredible comfort and a legacy of layered designs that lives on.

The Air Max 97 burst onto the scene in – you guessed it – 1997, arriving before the millennium and just in time to hit that future-technology sweet spot that the world was obsessed with. Catching the attention of sneakerheads and fashion enthusiasts alike with its layered “ripple” upper, its new and slick hidden lacing system completed the cool, curved design that would be parallelled with the iconic Japanese bullet train.

Designed by industry legend Christian Tresser, the Air Max 97's inspiration came from the rippling caused by a raindrop hitting a puddle, with its concentric lines and inset shaded elements flowing from front to back, all in full breathable mesh. All those waves sat atop a first-of-its-kind, full-length Air Max cushion that covered you from toe to heel, carefully engineered for durability and comfort.

Earning its nickname as the “The Silver Bullet” for its release colourway, the Air Max 97 was a cult classic that was adopted as a regular lifestyle piece by creatives, DJs, and artists alike across Europe.
