We all want to know, what is the next step in running shoe innovation. The answer? Make them more sustainable!

It’s no secret we are faced with the urgent need for action to produce high performance product whilst limiting the environmental impact on our planet.

Nike’s most innovative performance running shoe is now its most sustainable

Nike are taking their biggest leap forward yet with MOVE TO ZERO on their quest towards zero carbon and zero waste to protect the future of sport.

Introducing the Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% Nature, made with at least 50% recycled content by weight – the highest of any Nike performance footwear to date.

Now then, let’s dive into some of the key components of the Alphafly Nature. Do these alternative materials result in a performance drop off? Or are we looking at a real statement in the high-performance running arena?

Those running shoe aficionados out there may remember the Flyprint upper only available on incredibly limited renderings of the Vaporfly Elite, released for major marathons such as Chicago and London. Flyprint was a revolutionary 3D printed material boasting incredible lightweight properties. With the Alphafly Nature, a variation on Flyprint returns made using TPU from recycled Zoom Air Bags.

Takeback Flyknit yarn adds strategic reinforcement utilising leftover Flyknit composed of plastic bottles to maximise recycled material wherever possible.
The Alphafly outsole has received much acclaim for its effective traction and surprising durability merit. Nike Regrind material is mixed into the outsole here in another attempt to maximise recycled content without sacrificing traction or durability.
No doubt one of the most iconic features of the Alphafly in creating a truly unique silhouette is the implementation of Air Zoom pods in the forefoot. The function of these pods is to provide the ultimate balance of cushioning and efficient energy return. In the Alphafly Nature, they’re crafted from at least 65% recycled materials! This combined with the full length, 80% recycled carbon fibre plate makes for a ride like nothing else.
Last but not least, the heart and soul of any shoe, let’s look at this totally unique midsole construction. It’s pretty simple really, ZoomX foam rules the roost. The perfect balance between soft and responsive. With the Alphafly Nature, you’ll get the same performance but this time from recycled ZoomX parts, carefully moulded together.
Times are changing. Nike have always been committed to making runners better. Now, they’re equally committed to making the world a better place for runners. We can’t wait to follow the MOVE TO ZERO journey and hope to see sustainable running innovation continue to progress. There’s no planet B.
